William Meek 1881

Can someone help please. Im looking for the birth certificate for William Meek born 1881. Born to Caroline Meek at Factory Row, Cinderford, he is shown as 2 months old in the 1881 census. I cannot find his name in the register of births for the first or second quarter of 1881 or even the 4th quarter of 1880. I have followed the other William Meeks without success. This William married Mary Ann Bennett in 1901 at St. Stephens Church, Cinderford.

Charles Henry Manns

I am looking for information on Charles Henry Manns who was born on 1st June 1878 in Kempley his mother was Sarah but his father is not given on his baptism or on birth certificate.

I have found a Sarah Ann Manns born 1857 (father William and Mother Ellen)who is the correct age to have had a child in 1878.

She married William Hodges in 1880 and according to the 1881 census she had a son called Charles Hodges but there is no record of his birth.

Could this Charles actually be Charles Manns and is there any way of proving it ?

Albert SMITH (b 1868 aprox) married Rhoda Minnie GOODE 1888 (reply)

Hi

I thought that everything to do with Alberts parents was gone but then I remembered that in my Great Grandmaothers funeral notice which she wrote (she had slow acting overian cancer) she lists her parents as:

James Smith, Elizabeth Hughes (who were in fact her grandparents). It also places her birth at Ruffell (actually Ruffet) Little Dean Glos Eng.

What shook me is that I've been contacted by a very nice person in NZ who thought that we might be related. As it turns out one of us, both of us or neither of are wrong but our research doesn't marry.

Where it does take me is to the birh of Albert whom I (in spite of now posessing 3 birth certificates for him which are all wrong) have never reconciled into the family of James and Elizabeth properly;

The 1871 and 1881 census's I was working from may refer to another family:

1871 census

James Smith 39
Elizabeth Smith 44
Thomas Smith 17
James Smith 15
Alice Smith 13
John Smith 11
Sarah Ann Smith 9
Elizabeth Smith 7
Enock Smith 5
Abbert Smith 3 (I'd say this is Albert with a trasncription error)

1881 census

Name: Albert Smith
Age: 13
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1868
Relation: Son
Father's Name: James
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Gender: Male
Country: England
Education:
Employment status:

View image
Occupation: ((Iron Miner)) Scholar

Registration district: Westbury On Severn
Sub-registration district: Newnham
ED, institution, or vessel: 30
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
James Smith 49
Elizabeth Smith 53
Albert Smith 13
Sydney Smith 9

She seems to have had Sydney and Albert quite late but there is a consistent spacing in the ages.

The research sent to me is following James and Elizabeth Smith (nee Mills, born in Stroud. I suspect that perhaps I have a cross over into their lives or my friend in NZ has a cross over into the lives of my Smiths (its at this point I despair the common names). "This particular James Smith was an iron miner born in Mitcheldean in 1831, son of Matthew Smith, born in High Wycombe in 1806".

Claire has also written this which really threw me as this is the cross over of our research:

"My line starts with Matthew (b.1805 in Buckinghamshire, son of Richard Smith, papermaker) and Eliza (nee Barnard) Smith - lived at Abenhall (v. close to Mitcheldean) Son James Smith b. 1831 Mitcheldean (10 siblings) Married Elizabeth Mills from Stroud in 1828.

Children:
Thomas, James, Alice, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Enoch, Albert (b. 1866), Sydney (all appear in census records)
The family lived in Townsend St Mitcheldean.
The men were mostly iron miners.

I have a record from the church register from Mitcheldean (on FOD website) that has Albert marrying Rhoda Minnie Goode on July 18 1888, father of groom James Smith miner, and an Elizabeth Smith as witness."

What it means is that we are in trouble with our research and your keen mind and insight would be very welcome (gripped by despair as I am of the thought that all these years work are wrong :-).

Writing it out has helped a little though as the clincher is that the funeral notice of my great Grandmother lists James and Elizabeth. I'd better scan that and send it to claire to see what she makes of it.

Kind regards

PROBERT - assoc. thread (reply)

Thanks slowhands,

Not sure this is my ancestor Thomas Probert thou.

According to the 1911 census John Probert is 42 making his date of birth about 1869. Also on John's marriage certificate he is 23 when he marries Rosa Price, making his date of birth also 1869.

However i have found this afternoon a record on the Forrest of Dean Family Site for Thomas Probert marrying Elizabeth Tyler on the 26th June 1866. There residence at the time was Coalway Lane End (Coleford) which ties in with the records i have for the Baptisms of Lonnie Victor and Hilda May Probert in 1904. Also with John being born in 1869, three years after the date of this marriage, this would also seem to tie in.

The marriage of Thomas Probert states that he was 28 when he married Elizabeth Tyler, making his date of birth about 1838.

The only trouble is there is a 38 year gap between the marriage of Thomas Probert in 1866 and the Baptism of Lonnie and Hilda in 1904, therefore If you are able to find any cencus records which would confirm that this Thomas is my ancestor i'd be very interested to see them.

Kind regards,

Albert Smith (b 1868 aprox) married Rhoda Minnie Goode 1888

Unhappily everything I thought I knew about Albert Smith with the exception of his marriage to Rhoda Minnie Goode in 1888, the birth of their daughter Olive Elizabeth Smith in 1888 and his death in Runcorn Cheshire in 1891 are now proving to be incorrect.

Richard Heighway and Mary Preest (reply)

Thank you both very much, it’s given me another round of headaches.
The only other Mary Preece with a father Richard, that I can find a marriage for, married Alfred Henry Hodges in 1879 at Monmouth. I’ve found them on the 1881 census in Monmouth, Alfred aged 27, Mary aged 31 and Alfred jnr aged 6 months. Alfred is a carriage builder, so I know I’ve got the right couple.
The Elizabeth Preest, that married Richard Skinner in 1834, was the daughter of John Preest and Elizabeth (nee Morgan). So the witnesses are her brother John (her father had died in 1820) and I think Richard Morgan must have been related to her mother. I haven’t actually ventured into the Morgan family.
Back to Richard Preest and Anne (nee Beach). Anne’s burial shows that she lived at Clearwell at that time, which isn’t far from Coleford. So I think it is a distinct possibility.
By the way Richard was also the son of John Preest and Elizabeth (nee Morgan).

Would it be possible to have PREECE included in the soundex for PREEST? It would make life a lot easier for us Preests.

gggrandfather: Leslie Oliver Probert

Proberts - East/West/Little Dean, Coleford and Cinderford

I wonder whether anyone is able to help?

Currently i have traced my Paternal family history back to my ggggrandfather Thomas Probert but have been unable to find any cencus or birth/marriage/death records relating to Thomas. The details i have managed to obtain thus far are as follows:

ggggrandfather: Thomas Probert
Profession: Labourer

gggrandfather: John Probert
Born: 1869
Wife: Rosina (Rosa) Probert (nee Price)
Married: 14/11/1892 in St. John's Church, Coleford
Residence: Lane End, Coleford
Profession: Collier
Children: Beatrice Maud Probert (B. 1894/5), Leslie Oliver Probert (B. 26/11/1898), Edgar Roy Probert (B. 01/07/1911), Hilda (B. 1902), Ida (B. 1910).

gggrandfather: Leslie Oliver Probert
Born: 26/11/1898 in Upper Cwmbran
Died: 06/09/1940
Wife: Alice Edith Probert (nee Mustoe)
Married: 13/04/1925 in Parish Church, Cirencester
Residence: Mount Pleasent, Cinderford
Profession: Collier, Enlisted in the Navy 01/10/1915
Children: Leslie John Probert (B. 14/03/1931), Ivy Edith Probert, Edgar Roy Probert (B. July 1911).

If possible i would like to locate the birth certificate for John Probert or any cencus records relating to Thomas Probert. However as the names John and Thomas and the surname Probert are fairly common i'm having trouble distinguishing which records relate to my ancestors.

Any information will be greatly received.

Thank you,

Scott
