Weaving:Newman family
This is a photo taken in 1941, showing '5 Generations' of the Weaving / Newman family from Cinderford. Most of them lived in Woodside Street.
This branch of the Weaving family still lives in the Forest today.
It shows Job Newman (1854-1950), his daughter Florence 'Bess' Weaving (1877-1951), her son Frank 'Cosh' Weaving (1896-1979),
his son Eric Weaving (1920-2009) and his son Brian Weaving (born 1938)
Frank Weaving was my grandfather.
Job Newman, originally from Gloucester, came to the Forest in the 1870s. He worked at Foxes Bridge pit for 20 years, before working on fairground attractions, which he owned and ran for 40 years. He retired at 86 years of age in 1940. A bit of a gypsy, he wore a gold earring.
He had 15 children, of whom only 6 lived into adulthood.
Bess Weaving was his eldest daughter and was married to Albert Weaving, a local miner originally from Littledean (c.1875-c.1959).
They had 2 children: Frank Weaving, who was also a collier for 50 years and Elsie Cann (1902-92) who was the first woman Vice President of the Co-op in the 1960s.
She was also a prominent member of the Baptist Chapel and the local Labour Party.
Hope people find this of interest. Many people in the local area will remember them I'm sure.
