Longney
LONGNEYis a parish and village situated on the river Severn, nearly 7 miles south-west from Gloucester, in the Eastern division of the county, upper division of Whitstone hundred, Wheatenhurst union, Gloucester county court district, Gloucester rural deanery and archdeaconry and Gloucester and Bristol diocese.
The church of St. Lawrence is an old stone building, having chancel and nave in the Early English style, and (in the perpendicular style) a tower with 8 bells: it was thoroughly restored and partly rebuilt in 1873 at a cost of £1,300. The register dates from the year 1660.
The living is a vicarage, yearly value £130 with residence and 6 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor and held by the Rev. Edward Richard Nussey, B.A. Of Oriel College, Oxford.
The charities are of about £30 yearly value. The trustees of Smith’s Charity are lords of the manor and chief landowners.

The soil is part clay and part alluvial; subsoil, blue lias. Apples, pears and plums are grown in great quantities, and the dairy produce is considerable.
The area is 1,490 acres; rateablt value, £2,917; and the population in 1871 was 450.
